This suspension will take effect from November 1, 2024, to facilitate the smooth conduct of the upcoming National Election 2024. Election Commission Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam has issued instructions to the National Identity Card Division to halt the distribution of Smart NID Cards during the election period. The suspension is deemed necessary to focus on the parliamentary elections’ activities. All ongoing smart card distribution efforts at the field level are to be accelerated and concluded by the specified date.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has indicated that the National Assembly elections’ schedule will be announced in November. The elections are expected to take place between the last week of December and the first week of January. If the elections proceed as planned, the distribution of smart cards is likely to resume by the end of January or early February 2024.

According to the latest voter update, Bangladesh has a total of 11 crore 91 lakh 51 thousand 440 voters. This includes:

• 6 crore 4 lakh 45 thousand 724 male voters
• 5 crore 87 lakh 4 thousand 879 female voters
• 837 Hijra voters

As per the Election Commission, approximately 1 crore 50 lakh smart NID cards have been printed, and around 50 lakh cards have already been distributed. The suspension will temporarily halt further distribution until after the elections.

The temporary suspension of the Smart NID Card distribution is a strategic move by the Election Commission to ensure a seamless election process.
