National Identity Card Expiration
Bangladeshi citizens are provided with a free NID card or National Identity Card by the Election Commission as proof of their citizenship. The period of this NID card is 15 years, and after the expiration of this period, the citizens must pay the specified fee again in order to obtain the card.
NID cards were distributed free of charge to about 80 million citizens before the 2008 national elections. Currently, Bangladesh has 11 crore 91 lakh 51 thousand 440 registered voters. Smartcards are currently being distributed to citizens on a priority basis to 2008 voters. Only 7 crore 1 lakh smart cards have been distributed so far out of 7 crore 73 lakh printed. Thus, 1 crore 9 lakh citizens will have to take the NID card again.
According to AKM Humayun Kabir, the Director General of NID Division, a citizen’s NID expires after 15 years and he must obtain another NID. The first distribution was free, but citizens must pay for a second one.
Due to the 12th National Assembly elections, NID plans to take up this program early next year, since many citizens’ NIDs expire this year.
NID holders who took the card before 2008 will have their NID period expire this year, so they must take it again and pay the prescribed fee by paying the second time.
How to Get NID Card Again
NID cards must be reapplied for after expiration by contacting the upazila election office. Along with the application, the required documents and fee should be submitted to obtain the NID card.
ID cards are valid for 15 years, so citizens who took NID cards before 2008 will expire this year. Thus, they must take a new NID card. NID cards taken after 2008, however, are not the reason for headaches. Due to the fact that their cards are smart cards and have not expired yet.
