EC Settles 278000 NID correction Applications in 3 Months
During a press conference at Nirbachon Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka, ASM Humayun Kabir, Director General of the National Identity Registration Wing (NIDW), stated, “We had initiated a three-month crash programme aiming to resolve 378,000 applications, and we have successfully settled 278,000 cases, including previous ones, by March 16.”
The initiative underscores the EC’s commitment to enhancing the NID correction process and ensuring that citizens receive accurate identity documents without undue delays.
Surge in NID Correction Applications
Despite the progress, nearly 300,000 fresh NID correction applications have been submitted during this period. Addressing this backlog, Humayun Kabir assured that the pending applications would be cleared within the next six months.
He further emphasized, “Once the voter registration process concludes, our full focus will shift to resolving these pending NID corrections.”
Voter Registration to End by May 5
The voter registration process is expected to conclude by May 5, and the updated voter list will be available by June 2025. The completion of voter registration will allow the Election Commission to dedicate more resources to addressing NID-related issues efficiently.
Challenges and Allegations of Irregularities
While the EC has made substantial progress, some NID correction applications remain unresolved due to staffing limitations. Additionally, allegations of financial irregularities have surfaced regarding the NID correction process.
Humayun Kabir acknowledged, “In certain areas, a clique is active, and complaints have been received regarding money being taken for NID corrections.”
In response, the Election Commission has taken stringent actions against those involved. Several individuals, including EC staff members, have been penalized. The Detective Branch (DB) of police has been engaged in investigations, leading to arrests.
- A data entry operator in Thakurgaon has been detained, and a case has been filed against him.
- In Narsingdi, two individuals have been charged with misconduct related to NID corrections.
EC Extensive Database and Future Plans
Currently, the EC database contains records for over 123.7 million citizens. To ensure transparency and efficiency, the commission is continuously working on improving its NID correction and voter registration systems.
With the upcoming completion of the voter registration process, the EC is expected to accelerate its efforts in processing pending NID correction applications and addressing citizen grievances effectively.
Conclusion
The Election Commission of Bangladesh has made significant strides in processing NID corrections within a short time. While challenges remain, including staffing shortages and allegations of irregularities, the proactive measures taken by the EC highlight their commitment to a transparent and efficient NID correction process.
